Still waiting on your W-2 or 1099? Don’t file your taxes just yet
2026-04-03
Every tax season, we see taxpayers rush to file, only to realize later they were missing key documents. That mistake can lead to delays, amendments, or even IRS issues.
At My Accounting Now, here’s what we recommend instead:
👉 Step 1: Request missing documents
Contact your employer, payer, or issuing agency right away. Many delays are easily resolved here.
👉 Step 2: Check IRS records
Your IRS online account may already have income transcripts available (W-2s, 1099s, and more).
If nothing shows yet, it likely means the IRS hasn’t received the data.
👉 Step 3: Don’t delay filing unnecessarily
If documents still don’t arrive, you can estimate income using Form 4852 to stay on track.
👉 Step 4: Fix it later if needed
If updated forms arrive after filing, you can correct everything with Form 1040-X.
⚠️ Watch out for this red flag:
Received a 1099-G for unemployment benefits you never got? This could be identity theft, act immediately.
💡 Pro tip: Filing fast is good. Filing accurately is better.
