Free Tax Filing Options

Filing tax returns is an important task for all taxpayers and there are many ways to do this for free.

IRS Free File is one of the free options available to taxpayers, whether online or in person. This service is made possible by a public-private partnership between the IRS and Free File Inc. Beginning January 10, 2025, Free File will begin accepting individual tax returns. This year, online guided tax software products will be provided for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less in 2024. Although the official IRS tax filing season begins in late January, IRS Free File providers will allow taxpayers to prepare and file returns now and hold them until they can be filed electronically on that date. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) over $84,000 can use Free File Interactive Forms (FFFF) starting January 27.

Another advantage of IRS Free File is that taxpayers can easily and simply claim the full amount of tax benefits for which they are eligible, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit, and other valuable credits. It is worth remembering that the EITC is available to qualified taxpayers with earned income under $66,819. It is also worth keeping in mind that the EITC is just one of several refundable dependent care tax credits that people who do not have a filing requirement may still be eligible to claim.

Another option offered by the IRS for taxpayers who live and work in participating states and have certain types of income, credits and deductions with relatively simple tax filing requirements is to use the Direct File program and file their tax return online directly with the IRS. The federal tax filing deadline is April 15, 2025. Direct File will be available through October 15, 2025.

In addition, the IRS offers free tax preparation assistance through two volunteer programs, which are:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): For people who generally make $67,000 a year or less, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.
  • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE): For people age 60 or older.

VITA and TCE centers are usually located in community centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other locations. Please note that you must bring certain documents, such as an original photo ID, Social Security number card, IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), wage and income statements, bank interest and dividend statements, and more.

In conclusion, free filing options play a vital role in the economy and in the well-being of taxpayers, as they promote tax compliance and reduce the possibility of taxpayers ignoring their obligations. They can also help taxpayers maximize their refunds, which is a great help for low-income families as the reduction can help them with daily activities.
