$1.2 billion in unclaimed tax refunds, deadline approaching fast

2026-04-17

More than 1.3 million taxpayers have unclaimed refunds for tax year 2022 and time is running out.

The deadline to claim your money is April 15, 2026. After that, any unclaimed refunds become property of the U.S. Treasury.

💰 What’s at stake

The IRS estimates:

✔️ $1.2 billion in unclaimed refunds

✔️ Median refund of $686 (many are higher)

And that’s just the beginning…

Many taxpayers may also qualify for valuable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), worth up to $6,935 for eligible families in 2022.

⚠️ Why some refunds go unclaimed

  • Tax returns were never filed
  • Missing documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.)
  • Misunderstanding eligibility for credits

Important: If you don’t file within 3 years, you lose the refund permanently.

📌 What you should do now

If you haven’t filed your 2022 return:

✔️ Request missing documents from employers or financial institutions

✔️ Use the IRS “Get Transcript Online” tool

✔️ File promptly before the April deadline

Keep in mind: Refunds may be applied to outstanding tax balances, child support, or federal debts, and may be delayed if 2023 or 2024 returns are not filed.

Lastly, this isn’t just about filing, it’s about recovering money that legally belongs to you.

Many taxpayers underestimate what they’re owed or assume it’s too late. In reality, there’s still a narrow window to act.

At My Accounting Now, we help individuals and business owners identify missed opportunities, recover refunds, and stay compliant across multiple tax years.
